Lois (Covic) Houder was born and raised in Chadron, NE and attended Chadron Prep. I always knew that I would attend Chadron State College. I graduated with a BS in business and music ed. My freshman year the music department joined MENC (Music Educators National Conference). We put on musicals once a year and I had fun participating in them. I met Leland Houder who was from Dunning, NE and had grown up on a ranch. He graduated with a major in math and industrial arts. We married the summer after we graduated. We both taught in Stratton, NE for three years after which we lived in Albuquerque, NM for four years. Leland taught Math during the day and I taught adult night classes. We came back to Nebraska and taught in Brewster for seven years. When our school consolidated with another school we moved to Colorado. Leland passed away at age 56 due to cancer. That is why I started a scholarship in his name. I finished my teaching career in Hugo, CO (23 years) - 37 total years teaching. At one time we had three teachers teaching in Hugo who had attended CSC. I started working at the Lincoln Country Court as a court clerk two days a week. I am grateful that I got my degree at Chadron. Lois Houder
