Gary Cooper spent the first summer of his life in Chadron with his parents, for whom this endowment is named. They were both teachers (although his mother took a few years off after his birth and then that of his brother) and his father attended classes at Chadron State that summer. They both taught for over 20 years in small towns in central and western Nebraska: Sargent, Anselmo, Dunning, Seneca and Minatare. They had students and Gary had schoolmates who later went to Chadron State, and they always spoke fondly of that summer together at Chadron. Gary, and then they, later moved to Lincoln where he graduated from the University and his mother had a 25-year career with the Lincoln public Schools. They all maintained an interest in their original home area and in helping some of the young people of that area attend Chadron State College.
